FAQs
What is the point of affiliating with the USU?
Without affiliation to the USU, clubs or societies can be charged for use of facilities, and they cannot use USU equipment. Other services do not apply to clubs or societies that do not affiliate, such as promotional and advertising benefits through USU noticeboards and www.usu.co.nz, office services, and financial attributes like sponsorship and grants.
How do I book rooms for club meetings or events?
The USU Clubs Coordinator through Facilities Management can organise a venue for your club or society to meet in. Please enquire well in advance to ensure a space can be booked.
How do I promote my club to Unitec students?
Via the clubs page on usu.co.nz, posters on the USU noticeboards, at clubs stalls in the Hub, through your club websites, and before or after lectures.
Are USU clubs and societies only for Unitec students?
No! The USU Clubs and Societies Policy states club membership must be 70% current USU members. Therefore, if you have 20 members total in your club, a maximum of 6 members can be non-Unitec students or staff.
Can clubs charge membership fees?
Clubs can charge membership fees, however we want students to have no excuses about joining up. I would hate something like this to happen:
Member: Hey, wanna join our cool club?
Non-member: Sounds cool, how do I join?
Member: Costs $10
Non-member: Can’t do it bro, no cash
Events that require finances to cover costs can be eligible for grants, as long as the grants application form is approved by USU. It is expected that members will pay for events on a one-off basis at a discounted rate, with non-members paying extra.
Can I make membership exclusive to only a certain group of students?
(departmental, international students, ethnic/cultural, religion, etc)
At the discretion of the USU, clubs can restrict membership to international students and students of a specific division, school programme or discipline. In other words, you can form an Engineering social club for you and your classmates, or a club only for student exchangers.
