You and your peers are invited to join Microsoft, and New Zealand’s brightest technical students, for the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2012 New Zealand Finals – at the Auckland Town Hall on the 30th of April.

The Microsoft Imagine Cup is the world's premier student technology competition, enabling student innovators around the world to use creativity and technology to solve the toughest problems we face today – making a positive impact that will transform the world in which we live.

Two Teams From Unitec are in it:

Decarbonators– Carbon Footprint Indicator (C.F.I) – a Mobile Phone Application

We are developing a creative technology solution that addresses a real-world challenge to help alleviate climate change and pollution problems caused by carbon emission. CFI can be installed on an individual’s mobile phone with pre-set profiles to choose from, enabling every individual to get an estimate of their Carbon Footprint while they commute to work etc. by different means of transport. Our system will award users with DeCarbon Points e.g. earn more snapper points every X times they make use of a public transport instead of driving or while they do carpooling etc. DeCarbon points can be used to claim discounts on food or at any other commercial organisations that are tied up with CFI.

Dawn Phenomena - Mission Diabetes System

Diabetes is a disease that affects millions of people worldwide. There is no cure for diabetes although a person can live a long and fruitful life with the disease if they are properly educated about how to live with the condition and have access to the proper medicines.

Our solution, the 'Mission Diabetes System' is a diabetes educational tool for children, particularly those that have diabetes. By exploiting the interactive features of video games, we are able to deliver diabetes education in a fun and unique way.

The culmination of a year-long endeavour, the National Finals event at the Auckland Town Hall will bring the top 20 teams together from institutions across the country. Here, they will find out who New Zealand’s top four teams are – and these teams will present their technology solutions to a prestigious panel of judges, in front of 1200 technology enthusiasts.
