Line-up Confirmed for Sounds in the Sun 2010!
USU are proud to announce that the line-up has just been confirmed for Sounds in the Sun 2010 and it’s going to be the biggest Sounds in the Sun yet!
We’ve got Katchafire, Tahuna Breaks, Elemeno P, Ladi 6, Sunshine Sound System (featuring P Digsss the peacekeeper – from Shapeshifter!), Dane Rumble, Ivy Lies and DJ Karn Hall playing live, loud and free for you on Thursday 25th of February as part of USU’s Orientation 2010.
There will be market stalls, food, a licensed area and games and even if you graduated last year, make sure
you come along because once again Sounds in the Sun is free for everyone - you don’t have to go to Unitec!
Be at the Unitec Rugby Fields from 12pm on Thursday 25th of February for the biggest Orientation event in the country! Last year saw over 8,000 people rocking out in the sun - don’t miss out!
Katchafire
Katchafire are a Maori reggae band from Hamilton, and our regular at Sounds in the Sun. They have achieved phenomenal success over the last few years both nationally and internationally with singles like “Giddy Up” and “Who you with”. Katchafire always give a mean performance at Sounds in the Sun and are once again back, by popular demand.
Tahuna Breaks
Tahuna Breaks are an Auckland-based uplifting funk, rock, roots reggae eight-piece formed in 2005. They won a Juice TV Music Award for Best Roots / Electronica Video in 2008, and if you went to the Big Day Out this year you would have seen them there ruling the lillypad stage!
Ladi6
Ladi6 is a former member of Christchurch hip hop act Sheelahroc, now recording and performing with DJ Parks. Nominated for countless awards and supporting some of NZ’s best: Shapeshifter, Scribe, Fat Freddy’s Drop, 50 Hz, Solephonic her performance is not to be missed.
Sunshine Sound System
Sunshine Sound System is made up of: DOWNTOWN BROWN… - The Doctor on the Turntables, P-DIGSSS..- Souljah of all Righteous Movements (Shapeshifter), KPz aka KILLA PUHA..- Activist Pushing for the Truth and Rights and SWITCH A.K.A Stauny Pops..- New Zealands best paid crate carrier..
Dane Rumble
Dane is an Auckland-based singer, songwriter, musician. Former member of hip-hop outfit Fast Crew. Moved into more of a rock/pop direction for his solo project after the group disbanded in early 2009. His debut single “Always Be Here” reached #13 on the RIANZ New Zealand Singles Chart and his second, “Don’t Know What To Do”, reached #10 and his current single “Cruel” is shooting up the charts.
Ivy Lies
This Auckland-based alternative pop-rock girl band was formed in 2006 and formerly know as Starlett. But now Ivy Lies are coming into their own with their youthful enthusiasm, stage presence and the intent reminiscent of Blondie, The Pretenders and The Bangles.

Sounds in the Sun is an all ages event. You just need to be 18 to be able to go into the licensed area which will be serving alcohol.

USU should have a time schedule…esp if its a all ages event! Which means there will be young children attending and 12.30-8.30pm is a very long day for children to be in the hot hot sun around drunk and sometimes disorderly students…I hope there is more shade than last year not just in the liscenced area….
So pls USU give us a time schedule…have you noticed how many women are at Unitec this week…older (mature) women with children…come on USU whats the schedule????

Hey there just wondering if the Nursing students get the day off to go to the event. I’m in Year Two and my lecturers haven’t said anything to us about it.
Most of the other people in my year are in their 30’s so they don’t care, but i know a few of us young-ens are keen to go ;D

Yes nursing students have the afternoon off, unless you are on a clinical placement. If you have any problems or if you still have classes scheduled you can contact usueducation@unitec.ac.nz

Hi,
Everyone at Unitec has classes cancelled from 12.30pm onwards on Thursday 25 February. Some classes have exemption though so I will get our Education Coordinator to contact you directly.
Cheers,
Jodine

I would also like to know if there is a time schedule available? It is a very long day to be hanging out waiting for certain performers and some of us will be trying to juggle work and placement around it!! Thanks guys, looking forward to it.

Dear Phantom,
Sounds in the Sun is an all ages event, although it is specifically targeted to students. While you are welcome to bring your kids, I would suggest bringing them for the earlier part of the afternoon before the crowds get too big. We will however be hosting a Kids’ Day Out specifically for Unitec students with children on Saturday 27 March. The details are on the “What’s On” section of the website.
There is going to be limited shade again this year as there are restrictions relating to guide ropes being used and structures at festivals. It is likely to be a bit a of an over cast day according to the weather forecast, however I would still recommend plenty of sunscreen and water.
You will see that I have just posted the order of play for Sounds in the Sun above.
Kind regards,
Jodine

@NikeOne
Just bring alcohol and see what happens.
If you know how to read, and are capable of simple math, then you could probably figure out when it will end.

Hi Jodine, Thank you. Yes I brought children early in the day and they esp loved Dane Rumble..Im sure I was the only person with children early in the day lol…I saw lots of pple with babies& toddlers arriving later in the day… I think that USU did a great job and it was def more secure than last yrs event! I suggest that as an all ages gig there be a area for the children with shade that is also safe from students that have been drinking in the hot sun..the only shade again was the beer tent & any responsible parent will not want their child/baby in there..
.”restrictions relating to guide ropes being used and structures at festivals” bahumbug hopefully there is a way around that in the future..I have been to many outdoor events open to all ages and there usualy is a childrens area…
I feel if its an all ages event then it has to cater for all ages…Im a parent & a student..I brought my kids to experience live music as usualy bands play in R18 liscenced venues…regardless the children enjoyed their experience..
Thank u USU…keep it up we love free stuff lol
