I’ve recently realised that I will one day be “old”. Oh yes, one day I too will be an age where people look at me and think either a). “Jesus Christ why is she dressed in her daughter’s clothes?” or perhaps b). “Damn she might have grey hair but I’d still hit that”.

As the university year finally winds to an end, it is an appropriate time to look back on the year of sport. Nathan Calis in conjunction with USU Sports Coordinator Ray Masila wrap up why 2011 was a sporting success for the polytechnic.

The year started well with the annual tag tournament attracting some extra participation both on and off the pitch. Ray was particularly pleased with the large turnout of spectators who came to see staff and students alike competing in the one-day tournament.

“So…that’s the Spiderman pencil case, the ‘Flight of the Concords’ lunch box, and the Batman bag. That will be $8.00”

I handed over my card. I needed some new things for Unitec this year. One cool thing about being a grown up is not having to wait for Mum to buy these things for you. You can just put it on your Visa and move onto lunch.

A lot of us have more than just the usual workload of university on our minds, and when the due date for assignments creep closer, it’s time to focus your mind. But is there a way to knuckle down, stay focused and turn your brain into a whiz machine you never knew you had? Of course there is, it can be found in the food you eat!

Talia is in her third year studying photography at Unitec. The approach to her photographs is simple: capturing the absurdity of the banal.  Her photography projects feature the everyday displays of home, emotion, and artifacts. She plays on a bit of irony in her photographs, by capturing uncomplicated settings that contain intricate undertones. Her series work runs with strong themes that are aesthetically charming. The mental juxtaposition of the simplicity and irrationality of everyday creates a stimulating photographic motif.

Sanji has loved photography since a young age, and first started to photograph on a professional level for USU. He began by taking pictures at the concert and party events on campus. This developed his interest in event photography, and he has since worked with many New Zealand and International music artists, such as: Tiki Taane, Katchafire, NERD, and Moby. He has a definite sense of travel, as he has moved around the world with him family for his entire life. He was born in Malaysia, and has been living in New Zealand for three years.

Julia is studying for her bachelor degree in photography at Unitec. She is very inspired by her own past, and the female genealogy of her family. Her most recent work has featured the connection to her mother and grandmother through old artifacts and heirlooms. This year, Julia has been incorporating a bit of installation into her photography. She stitches photographs together with red thread that represents the bloodline of her ancestors. Apart from her family, Julia is inspired by Chiharu Shiota, Annegret Soltau, and her own personal self-discovery.
