Moodle 2 FAQ for Students

1.     What is Moodle

Moodle is a Course Management System (CMS), also known as a Learning Management System (LMS) or a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Moodle's basic structure is organised aroundcourses. These are basically pages or areas within Moodle where teachers can present their learningresources andactivities to students. They can have different layouts but they usually include a number of central sections where materials are displayed and sideblocks offering extra features or information.

2.     How to access Moodle

Open a Web browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari) and enter Moodle into the URL (if you’re on campus) or http://moodle.unitec.ac.nz (if you’re off campus). Login to Moodle with your standard UNITEC Network username and your password will initially be your birthday (DDMMYYYY format) if you have not already changed it.

3.    How do I get help with Moodle?

If you are having problems logging into Moodle, please contact AskIT x 8484. If you are having problems accessing your course content or other resources within your Moodle course, please contact your lecturer for clarification.

4.    Navigating Moodle 2

From the Moodle home page, the courses you are enrolled in as a student will be listed in the Menu under “My Courses” and in a new block call Navigation. In the Navigation block you will be able to access:

My home” a personalised home page displaying links to the courses you are associated with and activity information (such as unread forum posts and upcoming assignments).

My Profile” quick links allowing a user to view their profile, forums posts, blogs and messages.

My Courses” lists (by course short name) and links to courses you are enrolled in. Click the course's short name to view the front page of the course or use the arrows to navigate quickly to a specific section, resource or activity.

6.    Changing your Moodle/Unitec Email account?

Lecturers will often use Moodle to email information to your about important events or other course related information.  When your Moodle account is created, it uses your email address which was on your enrollment form to create an an email address in Moodle.  If you wish to change this, you must do this through My Unitec Portal in the preferred email address option.  This will take one day to be reflected in the Moodle site. Here is a short video on the steps required to change your email address in Moodle.

7.    Customising your Moodle Layout

The dock is a completely new feature in Moodle 2. If you don't want to see all the blocks in the course, you can dock them by clicking a little white icon in the corner of the block. They then move to the dock area (left side of the screen) where they hide until you need them. The great thing is you don't need to do it every time you visit your course. It remembers which blocks you docked! To undock your blocks, hover over the Block and click the icon in the top left of the block. This will put it back onto the course page.
