Incendies Review

This movie follows two siblings quest to carry out their mother Nawal (played by Lubna Abazal) wishes.  Twins Jeanne and Simon are shocked to find out that their father is alive and they have a brother at the reading of their mothers will.  Jeanne goes to the Middle East where she unravels her mother’s dark past and how they ended up in Canada.   I wasn’t surprised to later find out that it had been nominated in this year’s Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.  This film seamlessly flicks between the past and present and gives the audience a brutal look at the effects of the Lebanese Civil war.    The entire cast were amazing especially Lubna Abazal and the scenes in what was supposed to be Lebanon (it was shot in Jordan) showed the beauty of the Middle East. I took my mum to the movie and both of us were moved by this film.  In fact, she is already looking at seeing it for a second time.  Even the fact that it has subtitles hasn’t turned her off.  Highly recommended.
