Superturtle
2/5
Having never heard of Superturtle, I guess I’m not as cool as I think I am. After all, they’re a Kiwi band whose lead singer Darren McShane is an ex-Bfm DJ and an engineer at one of the country's most renowned studios. You’d expect a little fame by association, then, but no., I thought they might be a bit famous through association, if nothing else... Superturtle describe their sound as "an eclectic and varied mix of instrumentation and boast an all analogue production" Eclectic? Yes. Varied? Check. Boast an all analogue production? I wouldn't exactly call it ‘boast’ - a miniscule amount of digital production would've worked in favour for this record. To The Rescue opens with Never Came Back, a synth-filled track reminiscent of The Shins' Wincing The Night Away. With that in mind, as I carried on through the album I noted an ever-present but relaxing accompaniment of Rhodes, strings and synths wrung through tracks such as Cash That Cheque, Roseanne and the song that truly owns its name, I Got Stoned. To The Rescue would be ideal for a sunny New Year’s hangover: sickly sweet, mellow and mediocre; ideal for a fry up. Bloody good on ya.
