Hundreds of Maori tertiary education representatives gathered in Wellington for an inaugural two day Hui in August to brainstorm advancements in the sector.

Leaders called for a focus on Maori advancement not just through settlement assets or business opportunities but by emphasising the skills acquired through tertiary education.

Hosted by Ako Aotearoa, The National Centre for Tertiary Teaching Excellence, the Hui provided the sector with the opportunity to think strategically about Maori advancement.

Ako Aotearoa Director Dr Peter Coolbear, believes it is important that tertiary organisations look beyond their immediate issues and take a wider view.

“Despite steadily increasing participation rates, the New Zealand tertiary system could do significantly better for Māori learners at all levels.” he says.

Professor Sir Mason Durie said Maori were heading into a "post-Treaty" stage and tertiary institutions needed to develop people who could step up and make sound decisions so assets could be managed and grown for future generations.

Hui guest speakers include the Minister for Tertiary Education Steven Joyce and Maori MP for Waiariki Te Ururoa Flavell.
