Typical Pete : )
Pete Hodkinson is away in Egypt! We wish him safe travels and lots of fun on his trip! Replacing his regular column, InUnison caught up with some of the other Executive members for their two cents on Generation Y!
Shannon Pennefather: "I hope that Gen Y will build on the freedom and awareness that previous generations have helped to create. Gen Y has a great opportunity to do this because communications and travel are easier than they have ever been. Free exchange of information is the biggest world changer of our time."
Shaun Overton: “Let’s be clear on something; Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Fall Out Boy – they are no substitute for great bands like Metallica and Guns N Roses. And what about Dawson’s Creek, Smallville, Buffy the Vampires Slayer and Twilight. ESPECIALLY TWILIGHT. Team Edward vs Team Jacob? Really if you’re THAT desperate, just go see “Australia’s Thunder from Down Under”. If this is the pop culture we are bringing to the table, then the next generation doesn’t stand a chance.
On a more serious note;
Who and what is Gen Y and should we care? We are Gen Y (1981+) and we should care about our future. Given our current dependency on technology, if Gen Y doesn’t get on board the eco-express, we could all find our children living in pre technological world (and who wants that?). Let’s dump the excessive drinking culture, our dependency on technology and fossil fuels and build a safe and sustainable world for our future.”
Jenine Kendale: “The single most important difference between Gen Y and earlier generations: The Millennials' familiarity with technology. Gen Y cut its teeth on computers and digital media. More than any other population segment, Gen Yers see technology as enhancing the quality of their lives — making work easier, allowing them to manage time better and bringing family and friends closer. 90% of Gen Yers over the age of 18 use the Internet. 75% use social networking — Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. 60% of them access the Web wirelessly while on the go. 83% keep their cell phones nearby, day and night, awake or sleeping. Two-fifths don't even have a land line.”
