President

So here we come to it folks, the end of a stellar year. It’s with some sadness that I write this, my final “tirade” for 2011 and indeed the last of my presidency. Elections have run their course and come January 1st I’ll be handing over the keys, cape and control. To the incoming Prez of 2012 (and beyond?) Mr. Shannon Pennefather, Congratulations, you faced some pretty solid competition and I can only wish you the best of luck (and hard work) next year.

Kia ora Unitec,

Kia ora Unitec!

Question: How do you make what a Students’ Association does “sexy”?

“Hey what are you guys doing?”

“Haha, we’ve got one of our mates dressed up in red and white striped clothes hiding down in the hub, now we have to try and spot him amongst the orientation crowd”

-quote of the week from a group of students on the top floor of the HUB attempting to start up the “where’s Wally” club… Nerd-tastic.

Kia ora Unitec,

Hopefully you’re all still buzzing after the orientation rush and rearing to get into the meat of semester 2.

I’m gonna keep this short and snappy, right now there are just a few things you need to know:

Kia ora Unitec!

So the madness begins again…

As usual, semester 2 has snuck up on us all far too quickly. Strolling in side by side with Orientation 2, promises wonderment. It promises learning opportunities. It promises a chance to get to know some new faces, and of course it promises a little debauchery here and there. Stay tuned-in and keep an eye out for the raft of events kicking off on campus over the next two weeks.

Typical Pete : )

Pete Hodkinson is away in Egypt! We wish him safe travels and lots of fun on his trip! Replacing his regular column, InUnison caught up with some of the other Executive members for their two cents on Generation Y!

“Sup Mr. Prez! I’m in first year! Get me some good grades, eh?”

-Quote of the week from a student who flatteringly overestimates the extent of my academic influence here at Unitec. The library is your friend bro!

So, what’s goin’ on?

USU is currently working with Unitec to re-craft the nature of student representation on our campus. The Student Voice project has been underway since late last year. The long and the short of it is a question: “How does Unitec engage with students?”

KiaOra from Egypt!

Or as they say here, “marHaban”!

Pete is away in Egypt…but here is a postcard update of his trip!

“Yo! Mr President, do something about this f*&!ing weather bro!”

-Quote of the week from a student who greatly overestimates the extent of my powers. I’m flattered though buddy, and hey, because you asked nicely, I do know a guy who knows a guy; I’ll look into it and have my people call your people.

So… people, what is within the reach of my powers as President? What do I do? And why should you care?

It’s my job to represent you, to carry the student voice, to be engaged… but what does all that mean?

Kia ora Unitec,

As the first few weeks of semester fly by in a haze of books, bands and beers, I chuckle warmly at the bleary-eyed, midnight oil-burning students marching gingerly to class just as I did after my first O-week. I can’t help but ponder why they call it “orientation”, when it’s spent so disoriented.
