Fashion Week

Fashion Week launched this morning in a concrete holding shed originally used during the America’s Cup. Guests, media, models, blogers and random hangers-on braved gale force winds as they crossed the dangerous and swaying pontoon on their mission to arrive at fashion week - with hair still intact. Few were successful, with the top trend of the day being big, gale-swept hair known as a “Pontoon –do”.

Starfish, an eco label designed by Laurie Foon, kicked of the week with - not a bang - but something more akin to a whimper. Things hadn’t looked good when the coffee line was a mere 10 people long, but when around three quarters of the tent seats were empty things got dire. Ushers were a little slow on the uptake and the runway photos will no doubt show an embarrassing amount of empty seats. The clothes were lovely consisting mostly of pastel velvets, vintage floral prints and silhouettes, puffed sleeves and feminine details. They were cute, unlikely to be a standout of the week, but not deserving of the lacklustre turnout. Air New Zealand has pulled out as the naming rights sponsor to become a mere “elite” sponsor. So, with NZFW missing it’s “A” this week I had to wonder if the lack of naming rights sponsor is responsible for  Fashion Week looking just a bit budget – or perhaps  the crowd was just lazy, sleeping in, or more fashionably late than usual. Only coming shows will tell.
