Waitomo Caves Black Water Rafting

Saturday 15th September

In the heart of the Waikato lies the mighty Waitomo Caves. The caves were first explored in 1887 when the local Maori chief and an English surveyor built a raft and followed the river through the cave shaft to see where it lead. They soon found that their candles were not the only things casting light in the otherwise pitch-black underground corridors. Thousands of tiny glow worms live on the caves’ ceilings glowing like stars in the night sky.

Black water rafting is a uniquely NZ experience and involves travelling through the natural underground river system in the darkness, floating on an inner-tube. After an hour underground navigating our way through the caves, sometimes crawling below low rock ceilings, jumping off underground waterfalls and floating serenely downstream beneath a “sky” of glowworms, we’ll warm up with a hot shower and some hot soup.

All you need to bring is your bathing suit and towel, all other equipment (wetsuit, fleece, boots) is provided for you.

Cost: $95 for Unitec students; $105 for everyone else Includes transport, caving adventure, photos, soup and bagel.
